It is divided into 100 cents. Kshs notes come in denominations of 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 Kshs. Coins come in denominations of 50 cents, 1 , 5, 10, 20 and 40 Kshs. SHOPPING During weekdays, most shops and related small size businesses open at 0800 hrs to close at 1700 hrs. Shopping malls and supermarkets extend their opening hours sometimes up to 2100 hrs. Recently, however, there has sprung up a number of supermarkets and other businesses that operate 24hrs. BANKS Most banks open at 0900 hrs weekdays to close at between 1500 hrs and 1600 hrs. During weekends, they open between 0800 hrs/0900 hrs to close at midday. A few will however close at 1500 hrs Saturday. However almost all banks have automated Teller Machines that work 24hrs and majority of them accepts atleast all major international credit & debit cards i.e. visa, MasterCard, paypal e.t.c POST OFFICES Post offices open at 0800 hrs to close at 1700 hrs. However, you can post mail from any of the numerous mail deposit points across the country. Postage stamps, cards and envelopes are available in regular shops. TIPS (AT YOUR DISCRETION) Tipping is a culture practiced in Kenya as a measure of appreciation of good services offered. You are free to give any amount of your will. ELECTRICITY The general voltage supplied by the main electricity is 240 V. It is well advised that you carry with you an adapter for any of your equipment such as cameras & laptop. This will save you the cost of buying new ones that are available at the receptions of some hotels or from regular shops dealing with such appliances. HEALTH Malaria: it is advisable to take malaria prophylactics before entering Kenya. Wear long sleeve shirts and long trousers while in places where mosquitoes are common. Other measures could include the use of mosquito repellents. TELEPHONE The international dialing code for Kenya is +254. Most accommodation facilities have a central telephone available at reception, but not in individual rooms. When making an international call, dial 00, then the country code, for instance, 44 (UK), and then the number. WATER Bottled water is available and is recommended.
